The Jebel Jais Mountain Road
The drive up Jebel Jais is a 36-kilometre engineered serpentine of around 30 gentle hairpins, holding an average gradient of 5.6 percent (with a 13.4 percent maximum) on a fully paved surface. From Ras Al Khaimah city it is 45-60 minutes to the viewing decks; from the Al Hamra or Al Marjan coast, allow about 90 minutes.
The true 1,934-metre summit lies across the Omani border, so the UAE-side high point is roughly 1,892 metres. Any economy sedan manages the route — a 4WD is not needed. Before you head back down, review the descent advice in our driving in Ras Al Khaimah guide.
Pair the mountain with sea-level sights to fill a day — see the coastal forts, beaches and desert on our things to do in Ras Al Khaimah page.
Driving the Mountain Safely
Preparing for the ascent comes down to fuel and braking. Temperatures at the top fall 6-8°C below the coast and approach freezing on winter nights, so carry a layer. EV drivers will find chargers at the Viewing Deck Park, and arriving early or just before sunset is the surest way to find parking on busy weekends.
No fuel on the mountain. Fill up at the ADNOC station at the base before you start the climb. On the long descent, use engine braking — shift the automatic to 2 or 3 — to avoid brake fade rather than riding the brake pedal the whole way down.
What's at the Top
The summit area is a purpose-built adventure hub. Some zones charge for parking, so keep a little cash handy.
- Jais Flight — the world's longest zipline at 2.83 km, from about 300 AED on weekdays and 410 AED at weekends.
- Jais Sky Tour — a cascade of six ziplines across the canyons, with the UAE's highest suspension bridge.
- Jais Sledder — an alpine toboggan reaching about 40 km/h, at 40-50 AED a ride.
- 1484 by Puro — the UAE's highest restaurant, requiring a booking and a minimum spend.
- Bear Grylls Explorers Camp — survival courses and cabin stays in the mountains.
- Viewing Deck Park — panoramic platforms, entry 5-10 AED per person.
Collect your car early from the Ras Al Khaimah airport car rental desks and you can be at the summit for an afternoon booking the same day.

Musandam (Oman) Cross-Border Trips
The Omani exclave of Musandam is reached via the Al Dara border post, 45-60 minutes north of Ras Al Khaimah, then about 1.5 hours on to Khasab for the dhow fjord cruises. Crossing an international border in a rental car takes real preparation — most chains, including Hertz, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise and Sixt, forbid taking their cars into Oman at all.
- Approved operators — in practice only Avis, Thrifty, Dollar and Autostrad allow the crossing.
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) — required from the rental company, 450-750 AED, requested 48-72 hours ahead.
- Orange Card — Omani third-party insurance, around 106-150 AED.
- Original Mulkiya — the physical vehicle registration card from the rental desk.
- UAE exit fee — 35 AED per person at the border.
- Oman eVisa — 5 OMR, roughly 48 AED.
Warning: The Wadi Bih mountain route into Oman is closed to tourists — it is open only to UAE and Omani citizens. Use the Al Dara coastal crossing, not Wadi Bih.
If you would rather keep things simple and stay inside the UAE, plenty fills a week without the border paperwork — start from the home page.
